I've got a database at work that is used by users of both Access 97 and 00. I don't think that someone has tried to convert the database from 97 to 2000, because one can still open the database in 97. The problem is that it will not open in 2000 at all. Even tried saving it as a different name and converting it, but it didn't work. Also the Swithchboard stopped opening on startup in 97. Tried clicking on Tools then Startup and open the switchboard, but when you select the switchboard as the form to open and close the startup box and then go back in the form to open box and it is filled with none. I can understand a 2000 database not opening in 97 due to incapatibility, but why would a db open in 97 but not 2000?

It's always hard to be sure, but the first thing that usually gets you is a guaranteed change of .DLL files necessitated by some new features in AC2K. At least (but not limited to) file DAO36.DLL in AC2K which corresponds to DAO35.DLL in AC97. You have to CONVERT the database. (If it is a front-end, back-end situation, you have to convert the front-end.)

Is this a .MDE or .MDB ? If it is a .MDE, you need desperately to find the .MDB so you can convert it.

If you have the .MDB file, it will HAVE to be converted for use by AC2K, which is why I mentioned front-end/back-end. If you split the files that way, you can have an AC97 front-end and an AC2K front-end plus a single back-end. Otherwise, you have a total incompatibility situation.

To fix the AC2K version from the .MDB, you must be an administrator who has rights to update your registry. Open a module so you see a code page. Follow

to see the references dialog box. One or more of the checked boxes should say "MISSING". These are your culprits. You will have to highlight each missing item by clicking it. That will show you the expected file name. Now browse for the closest matching file you can to the name that was highlighted. The differences will probably be in version numbers - like DAO35 or DAO36 or DAO2535 (the compatibility library between AC95 and AC97). You might have to do a Find Files because some things might well have moved.
