The snipping tool serves me well but is let down by its drawing capabilities - all freehand and no ability to draw boxes or circles. Had a look at snip & sketch but doesn't seem to have any additional features.

Lots of apps out there, some free, some subscription - does anyone have any recommendations?

The latest version of the snipping tool has boxes and circles:

I can't take a screen shot of the controls 'cause catch 22.... :)

When I was still working with the U.S. Navy, we had Snag-It and I thought it was really good. Since we had a site license, I have no idea what it costs, but I will say that I liked using it and found it incredibly easy when building documentation to include all sorts of screen-grabs and dump them directly into Office products. Word and Power Point both benefited from its presence.

Just tried Screenpresso - much the same functionality as Greenshot but nicer interface

They are in competition for the print screen button so can't show side by side.

Greenshot is my permanent favorite! a print-screen press instantaneously opens a drawing box to select your view to copy - and then once selected, immediatley opens up a right click menu to put on clipboard, save instantly, save-as, or plop into paint - where you then draw your stuff.

Another vote for Snagit, though I haven't tried the built-in snipper for some time.

I really like Irfranview because of all the other things it can do. Batch conversions, file management, editing, etc.
The screen capture is not the most intuitive because you have to go through the menu. But you can do a whole lot afterwards.

OK, I see only two mentions of snagit. In my opinion, if anyone suggest anything except snagit, either he wants to use a free utility or he has not experienced it yet.
As a screen capture app, I don't see any short coming in snagit. All tools one may use is there.
From common tools like Callout, Steps, Fill, Crop, Eraser & Highlight, up to very professional tools like blur, Grab text from image, Cut Out, magnifier etc.
Capturing cursor, context menus and their sub-sub menus, magnifying apart of an image are all there, waiting to be used.

Not only images, you can even capture videos from your screen, (with or without system Audio or microphone) and then save them as video format or gif to share with others.
Capturing while scrolling a long list in any app (Excel, Chrome,....) can be done only with a few clicks. You need a panorama image, just ask for it. It will be done in no time.

I really can not decide which of its powerful tools is my favorite, but for sure I like its "Simplify" tool a lot (bellow gif)

The part I liked most about SnagIt was that I could snag some text from Notepad or a web page and paste it into Word, Power Point, or Outlook not as an image but as text compatible with the target utility. One of my jobs involved documenting programs I wrote, and between SnagIt to capture images and Word for the descriptive text I had some REALLY good documents - and some Power Point tutorials - that captured the look and feel of the application perfectly (in my opinion, of course).

yeah you can even batch-execute the placement of captions according to the geolocation property of the pic!

I use both Snagit and IrfanView for different tasks. Ease of use for screen captures goes to Snagit. File batch processes, image management, batch processing, and other post-capture tasks go to IrfanView.

Been using IrfanView for years, and never knew that. :(
The screen capture is a little clunky compared to these other solutions. But it sure is useful for other things.
