assigning a number to a record

I working with alot of records and would like to assign file number in the patter 001,002, 003 ... any ideas

Use the AutoNumber data type in your table design for that field.

I'm already using autonumber in the same table.

It's a pain ..

You can create your own but that will also be a pain. Search around for there are lots of threads related to creating a custom ID number.
