Attaching images to records, not via subform

I'm trying to have a scanned ID picture come up with a specific record (SS#) on a form. I've seen the subform trick, but can't make it work very well.

Would I just make an extra field for that table, add the path information, and....

How do I have the image automatically show up for each record to consult the path and then display the corresponding graphic?

If you are not going to have many pictures, you could store the pics in the table as an OLE field.

On your form you would have a large textbox with its control source being the OLE field.

Keep in mind that pictures will bloat your database very quickly.
If you need lots of pictures you should link them outside the dbase.

Perfect solution - but how do I link them outside the dbase? Do I make a text field and have them type in the link to the picture - then have some sort of image unbound to pull from that link?

I don't want to store the image in the dbase, but rather in a folder where we can pull them from via links.

Can someone help me with the details please?
