Auto fill number

Hello ,
I have a form the I use to input speaking event dates, and each event is automatically assigned an ID number. However I just recently went over 1000 and the numbers are now skewed to things like 10A6k instead of 1001, 1002. Is this because I need to set that field to allow 4 digit ID number? Please help it is very hard to search for events with these strange ID's. Thank you.

What's your code for assigning these numbers? And are they, in fact, numbers (i.e. numerical datatype) or simply digits in a text datatype?
