Hi there, I am currently working on automating an annual leave system at work but am really struggling with something.

The leave is done in half hour slots e.g 8:00 - 8:30, 17:00 - 17:30 and am wanting the user to submit a form asking for leave for a date(s) & time on a form & for it to check if there is any availability & return a Approved/Declined response.

I would very much appreciate any help anybody could give me on this.

Thanks in advance

Think of it as a reservation system, similar to a hotel/stadium. You could have a table "tblAnnual_Leave". Each half hour time-slot could be assigned a unique id number. To identify the status of a time slot, you could use a numbering system 0=available 1=applied for 2=taken (approved).

A major issue with designing an annual leave system, what do you mean by "availability"? With most reservation systems only one person can occupy something like a stadium seat. My example above is based on a one person reservation. However, with annual leave, several people can be off at the same time. The annual leave table would need to be designed to allow several people to reserve the same time slot. Furthermore, while several people can be off at the same time, there may be special situations where two or more people can not be off all at the same time.

How you define "availability" and resolve it, is up to you.
