Automatice Table Field Entry Based on Another Field Selection

I would like to add a Sort Criteria field entry to a table based on input to another field. In this case, I want to automatically add the number 1 to an existing Sort Criteria field when the Issue Status is selected as Hot in this field. When the Issue Status is selected as Active, I want the number 2 to be added to the corresponding Sort Criteria field...etc.

I will then sort by the Sort Criteria fields rather than the Issue Status fields.
