Autonumber problem

Hi guys i would like to ask for your favor... right now i'm creating a table with a field named Number, with data type = autonumber, and i did not put a primary key into it.
My problem is when i insert data, such as a,b,c.... the autonumber order the numbering of the data automatically, but when i'm deleting the data "c" and then i put a new data "d", the autonumber jumps straight to "4" and then i'll have the autonumbering for my data like this : 1,2,4,.... and when i'm deleting the "4" i get an autonumber straight to 5, like:1,2,5,....
How can i overcome this problem.. can anyone help?

What you are describing is exactly what Auto Number is supposed to do.

It sounds like what you want is something other than Auto number.

If you search this forum for topics like "Incrementing Sequential Number" or similar, you should get plenty of hits, as this topics comes up on a regular basis.

As a starter you could use the Dmax() function to create your own incrementing number.
