I'm in the US military. I would like to use the bar code on the back of the military IDs to populate an access database. Can you point me in the right direction as to how to get started?

Thanks in advance

Keyboard Wedge Scanner

There are two types of bar code scanner I am aware of, the simple type which is usually referred to as the wedge, or keyboard wedge scanner. The scanner is effectively connected to the keyboard port on your PC, along with the keyboard via a wedge shaped adaptor (hence the name) and the scanned information is transmitted to your PC as keystrokes. I don't know much about the other type, I want to get hold of one and use it, but because the keyboard wedge type does such a good job nobody will authorise the purchase. The other type, plugs into a com port on your machine and this gives you a much greater control over its functionality.

For what you have described the keyboard wedge type will be adequate I am sure.

I use wedge type scanners for data entry into my access DB. Whatever scanner you choose, make sure you get a copy of the programmers guide with it. using this you can set prefixes/suffixes on the data you scan, you can set CR or tab or strip characters, add characters....

so far working great as this helps to eliminate human error on the data entry side.

symbol and metrologic make pretty good scanners ( symbol more expensive)

So, I'm also in the military and setting up a scanner for entry into my dining facility. I found the programers guide and I'll be giving it a look. I'm using the Metrologic MS9500 series scanner. What a great coincidence :) . Tim
