Beginning balance - Detail - Ending balance

Some sage advise please...
I need to write a report that shows beginning balance current period detail and ending balance. I have as input a transaction table. I know to get the period end and begin dates with a form. I am thinking of creating 3 queries and using dlookup to get the beginning and ending balance. Am I on the right track?

You could simply use a DSum rather than a query/DLookup. I'd probably get the beginning balance that way, and calculate the ending balance by adding the activity to the beginning balance.
