calculating controls with multiple sub reports?

I have 5 subreports that contain one field each that I need to total on the main report. I cannot get the control to calculate the five fields. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you referenced the subreport as a subreport?

For example: Subforms are referenced as:

Forms!Orders![Orders Subform].Form.Control1
