Cannot export RTF to Word

Access 2007 SP2 12.0.6423.1000
XP Pro SP2 (Also tried on a Win 7 Pro)

I have created 1 table with 1 field. I set the field to RTF
I created a form and saved several records with RTf data in them.
I created a report.
- generated report looks fine
- export to PDf looks fine
-export to Word 2007 SP2 does not work. All RTF text is converted to plain text.

1. Is this a known bug?
2. Is there a hotfix? If so, please direct me to the link.
3. Are there settings in the application or the o/s I should look at?
