Changing Linked Data

I currently has two tables with related forms that are linked through a field named Equipment Type. The Equipment form has fields called Equipment Type, ID, Validity and certificate number.

Every so often the validity and certificate fields will need to be edited however it changes the information that is already stored in the database. So i was wondering if it is possible to change the data without it affecting current records, just records from that point onwards

maybe i should try to reword this better.

I have a combo box in an Information form that once selected fills other fields in the same form. Thiese values come from an Equipment Type form.

From time to time i will need to edit some of the details on the equipment form. However at present this also modifies existing records whereas i would like to keep them the same and only chnage the details from that point on

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this would help me complete my project.
