ChatGPT recently got hilariously outmatched by a piece of tech nearly five decades old, an Atari 2600.

Software engineer Robert Caruso shared that the AI, despite its advanced capabilities, was “absolutely wrecked” by Atari Chess, a 1979 game that only thinks one to two moves ahead.

Even on beginner level, ChatGPT fumbled badly — confusing rooks for bishops, losing track of its own pieces, and blaming the Atari’s icons for being “too abstract.” When switched to standard notation, it still didn’t improve.

For over an hour, it made blunders that Caruso joked would get it kicked out of a third grade chess club, all while confidently insisting it could win “if we just started over.” Meanwhile, the old 8-bit Atari calmly held its ground, doing what it was programmed to do — and winning.
