Close a form/subform without adding a record

i have a form that holds names and addresses from a table and a subform containing transactions for that name. All works well until i put a button to close the form- not a problem unless i want to close without a new record. Part of the subform contains a combo box which starts blank and the form wont close until this is populated -but then that leaves me with a blank record. The error states - -related record required in table - ive tried all sorts of code but the error message seems to get there before anything else. any suggestions please?
