Compact dB without creating new dB

When I compact my database, Access creates a new database named 'db1.mdb' rather than just overwriting my existing database. How do get it just overwrite the old one? Some of my database just overwrite, but I have one in particular that just keeps creating new databases and I can't figure out what option or function is different. Thanks.

The creation of the db1 database is a normal part of the compact/repair process. It is normally deleted automatically; when it isn't, something has gone wrong with the compact/repair. I've heard of any number of causes. Here's one:

that's odd because I'm on I have several dB's on the same computer, all created on the same computer, but only one or two create a new dB when I compact. I will try the hotfix to see if this resolves the problem.
