I'm doing contract work for a small group of people (about 8 - 10) and quite offten, the database they are using gives them a message saying their database needs compacting and or repairing. The database they use is not large by any means. The people are using either Access 2000 or Access 2003.

My question: Why would the database nag them on a frequent basis that it needs to be compacted or repaired? Is there anything that can be done to get rid of this annoyance? All users have read and write access, and there is absolutely no security on the database.

Any assistance / ideas / comments are most welcome, and thank you in advance!

Usually the indexes are corrupted. My guess is somebody is not properly closing the db down. They are turning the PC off instead of shutting Windows down [while the db is still open]. Could be a hardware problem or a network connection issue. The old Ctrl + Alt + Delete keyboard combo is a db killer and will cause problems. Also, the db will continue to have problems if the users are sharing the db. The db should be split and each user needs a copy of the front end installed onto their hard drive and each front end copy must be linked to one shared backend that contains all of the tables.

Thanks for your reply - it's appreciated! I'll tackle the FE / BE side of the house, since the tables are relatively simple.... the users had made the tables before I came on board, and there are no indexes I am aware of.

I appreciate the comments and will keep plugging at it!
