Conditional Format question

I would like to set a column in my spread sheet to change color 30 days prior to the date in the cell. I used the formula =value(A1)<= Today() + 30. It seemed to work for one cell, but I couldn't get it to work for the rest of the cells in the column. The procedure that I used was to highlight all the cells in the column and then entered the formula in the conditional format box. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
