Convert Month Text to Actual Date

OK. I've looked around and the only suggested idea close to this didn't even remotely work. What I want to do is take the string of a month, (i.e. Jan or January) and convert it to a day (any day) in the month so I can calculate days in the month. I know how to calculate days in the month but how do I convert the text to a date?
