Count how many records per month

I know this has to be easy, but I can't seem to figure it out.

I need to be able to count how many records fall under each month historically for several years.

I think that's clear, but just in case:

March 2004
February 2004
January 2004
and so on...

The date is formatted mm/dd/yyyy if that's important.

You can run a query, but a particular type called a totals query. In your query design view, go to the View menu and choose Totals. Create a calculated field that includes the month and year of your date field. Calculate it using a formula that's like this: =Format([mydate],"mmmm yyyy")

In the "Total:" line in the query design view for that new calculated field, choose "Group By". For your other fields in the query, choose "Count".
