I have a crosstab which has three row headings: Kit #, Date, Team. These are sorted ascending by the kit # and sort fine. The column headings are based off of a part listing and the intersection value is the Sum of the number of parts in each kit. By default, the column headings are sorted Ascending alphabetically; what I need is for the Column Headings to sort Ascending based on the Item's Autonumber field. I can't fix the Column Headings in the query's property because the parts change daily. Whenever I try to add the Autonumber to the query in order to sort Ascending, the crosstab then gives me a new row for every single part in every single kit and I end up getting about 500 records rather than the 40 that I need (for the 40 kits). How can I crunch this down and have it display 40 rows with the column headings sorted ascending by Autonumber?

Try querying the cross-tab query and using that second query as your recordsource. You can then sort on any column you want. If your cross-tab query varies in the number of columns, add dummy columns to your data so that you always have the same number of columns in your cross-tab query.
