Database Repair

I am not a programmer so acronyms won't help me. My database crashed and I need to know how I can repair it. I am running Access 2001 Professional on an NT workstation. The database was up and running and suddenly when I clicked on one of my dropdown boxes and every field went haywire. The repair did not work and now it tells me that it is an unregognized file format. This database is critical to our mission. Please, any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes the cardinal sin has been committed and there was no backup made.

One thing to try is to create a blank database and import all objects including specifications into it from the database that crashed.

I used to get this error when I tried to open an ACCESS XP database with ACCESS97.

Thanks, but it didn't work. It just tells me that it needs to be repaired and then it is not recoginzed as a database format.

Try this.

Do not use windows explore to open the file.

Use start/programs/Microsoft access and then open the file.
Pls make sure the ACCESS you are using matches the database ACCESS version.

Have you tried opeining Access? Then instead of opening a database, from the tools menu Select Tools, then database utilities, then compract and/Or repair. If you don't already have a database open you will be promted for a database to repair from and then a database to repair to. Depending on your version, the menu choices may be different.

Sorry no joy with that either. Just got a reply from a data recovery comany saying they could not recover the database. Guess I am SOL on this one.

This dang thing keeps telling me that it is not a database file. Any advice?

Have your tried the free Microsoft Jet Compact utility? Click on the link below for the version of Access you are using. For more details, search the Microsoft Knowledgebase for Jet Compact. I have had a lot of success using Jet Compact to repair a db when I thought it was corrupted and Access could not repair itself.
