dell inspiron lcd screen.

i have an inspiron 6400 with a cracked screen, i replaced the screen with a good one from another 6400 and i get 12 sqaushed up desktops top to bottom of the screen,even if i swap inverters its the same
if i use an external monitor the pic is fine..
It works fine as a computer but i have installed bluetooth, wireless etc and would be better if the screen was working.
I want to buy a new screen but if there is anything else wrong i do not want to waste that sort of cash.Any suggestions most appreciated.

Well after some delving i have gathered that dell impregnates some sort of firmware that is calibrated to the motherboard, this is to stop anyone fitting a third party lcd panel.
Could anyone enlighten me on this subject as it would make sense that the 6400 panel that i replaced it with did not work properly.
