DMax syntax issue

can anyone assist? I have a txtbox and the control source is =DMax("[Requestnumber]","tblPMSRequest")+1, which works fine, but now I need to add an alpha character to it, depending on what form is opened. i.e. one form would be coded D, R and G. I've created a textbox on the form made it not visible, but it's not being picked up.
