I use Access as my grading program at school. Right now, if I want to excuse a student for an assignment, I delete that record.

What I would like to do is put an "X" or some other string into a field that is numeric and Access would ignore that score when computing the average.

A longshot, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks.

You can't store text strings in numeric fields, simple as that...
Use 99 or, what you actually should be doing, store the excuses and enter 0.

I thought of using 999

99 can easily be a test score. You don't want to use 0 because you cannot differentiate between those who earned the score zero and those who are missing the assignment. There are a few times when students are absent and a daily activity such as a simple 5 point warmup is excused.

Thanks anyway. It confirms what I thought.

A value of NULL will not be included in SQL's domain functions like average.
