i have a menu which recognises a user by using the environ function.

the problem i am getting is that with a small number of users the environ function isnt recognised by the system?

it gives them a #name# instead.

the crazy thing is that it also happens on simpler functions such as =Now() and =Date() which is really annoying, as these 3 things are a foundation on anything that is done within the system/!

the majority of users have no problems, which makes it even more annoying!

when i try to go into the properties of the label which has been assigned the function i get a message. (only on affected PC's)

see attached for pic

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE. HELP IS REALLY APPRECIATED!

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • Compact and repair the database; OR
  • Open a module, got to Tools -> References, and see of there is a MISSING reference. If so, restore it; OR
  • Create a new database and import ALL objects into it.

just tried all 3 sugestions without any success.

i can get the date and time to show but still showin #name? for the username

Is the user using the same version of Access? How about the same OS?

sorry i should have been clearer in my original post.

Access 97 on all networked PCs

Windows NT

Is there a space between the = and the Environ? Looks like one in your picture.

Are the users Administrators of their NT PC?

What happens if you open the EnvironVariables.zip sample I have posted in this thread...
Get Current User Name and Computer Name
That thread has alternatives to what you seek.

You have a missing or broken reference, search here for solutions, the question appears here on a regular basis

Hi Guys. Firstly, thanks for your replies and suggestions.

Ghudson:

the space doesnt make a difference as access removes it when you close the object properties.

I downlaoded a couple of the other environ databases in the thread given and they seem to work fine.

Im thinking its definately to do with the libraries and the referencing on some computers in the company. I think i will have to check these PC's to make sure the references are correct.

Hi,

Does anyone know which library in MS Access 97 is required to make the environ function work?

Did the Environ function even exist in Access 97? I don't think so.

Check the A97 help files to see if the function exists.

It definately exists.

Ive been using it freely but been having problems with some users wher it doesnt recognise the funtion and returns #name? in the field.

im not sure whether it has to be reference to a specific library for it to work or not?

Envrion works with Access 97. Does everybody have the same version of Access 97 [SP2]? Your problem has to be related to a reference on the offending machines. I would guess that the Office 97 Pro install was not the same for all affected PCs. All options for Access must be selected during the install for Access 97 has a lot of hidden stuff that you will not get if you do not select every option box and ensure that the box is fully checked [not half dark] to ensure that the Access 97 install includes everything during the install. Most companies do not install everything by using the standard install options and that is a mistake with Access 97.

Thanks for that. I'll have to check that out with our GIS.
