Filesave problem under WinXP

I have run an Office 97 / Access 97 database for many years under WIn98 with no problems. The database holds information which on a daily basis is extracted and pushed across to Word 97 where it is edited and finally printed.

I recently upgraded the computer to WinXP Pro sp2 and loaded up Office 97 and the database again. When I ran the database system there were a few oddities in transferring the data across to Word but generally speaking no problems EXCEPT one fairly big one.

When ever I have Access open, either on its own or , usually, with Word open, it is impossible to save a file with more than one letter the filename. Thus if I try to save a file in Word which contains the data that has been passed over from Access, and I use the filename "abcd.doc", the system will save "a.doc". If I type "xyz.doc", the system will save "x.doc".

Similarly, if I try to save a table from Access using saveas/export then, again, I can only save the file with a single letter name ..... filename "mnop.csv" saved as "m.csv".

To get the correct filename, I have to use Explorer to rename the file and that works ok.

What is going on here? I bet it is something very easy and simple but it has beaten me. Any help gratefully received

Are you doing this manually with the File Save As menu option or are you doing this with VBA?

Thanks for that. Good question.

The problem appears under both manual and VBA operation.

When Access alone is active then the problem appears and SaveAs/export or Save allows only the first letter of the typed in filename to be saved.

When Access opens Word via VBA and passes data across, then the problem appears in Word when the file is saved either manually or via a Word VBA . The problem is also in Access

When Access opens Word via VBA and passes data across and then Access is closed down leaving Word running then the problem appears in Word when the file is saved either manually or via a Word VBA.

When Access is open and then Word is opened manually, the problem appears in Access but not in Word.

There seems to be no problems with Access and Excel or Powerpoint.

Does this all make sense ? It is a weird problem but I bet it will be really easy to fix ....if only I knew how !!!

Sounds strange.

Just throwing out some thought's - would you be utilizing a form timer somewhere in Access? And/or use the "dreadful" SendKeys thiniges? Or some AutoKeys macro stuff triggering on some of the keys you're using?

Thanks Roy. I checked the following

Just throwing out some thought's - would you be utilizing a form timer somewhere in Access?
No

And/or use the "dreadful" SendKeys thiniges?
No

Or some AutoKeys macro stuff triggering on some of the keys you're using?
No

In the simplest manifestation of the problem, I open up an Access database and then try to save a table or query using saveas / export but can only save with a one letter filename.
What have I done to annoy Bill Gates ??

I have never heard of your problem. Have you considered uninstalling/reinstalling Office? By chance, did you search the Microsoft knowledge base?
