formatting dates in query

I have a date field in my table. I have not formatted the field in the table, allowing the 'general' format to be applied to the values. However, when working with these values i'm only interested in the month and a year. For instance, grouping values by the month of the year. Having two entries 1) June 18 for Food-Dining Out $20, and 2) June 19 for Food-Dining Out $10 I would like the querried grouped record to be: June Food-Dining out $30.

But when i add the date field for these records it separates my grouping.

Don't add the date field directly but create your own field by using:

MyMonth:Format([YourDateFieldNameHere],"mmmm")

And for year

MyYear:Year([YourDateFieldNameHere])
