I know I'm slow but when did we lose the ability to search on thread title in advanced search, and why?

You might find Google provides better search tools and can be set to search a specified site. I find it much more friendly. More detail here

Been there done that thanks and I still use it occasionally when I'm really struggling for an answer but I still find search by title in the forum gets me what I want 9 times out of 10 without faffing about pointing google in the right place. I just need to hit the right buttons to get there!
