Help me please

I seem to have made a big mistake when designing my database, I have a stock file which I set an index on which was autonumber but when I updated the stock from an excel import the key field used to reference the table updated via auto number. I should of used partnum So now I altered the query and added partnum as the main key problem is that if I open the query I can not add any records or append any of the data why is this?
