How do I supress auto-numbering in a non autonumber field?

I am data entering into an Access table. One of the fields (Field X) is formatted as a numeric field (no auto-number). I am having an issue with Access sequentially pre-filling Field X if Access "identifies" a sequential pattern in the two preceeding records (e.g., Field X for record 1 = 2, Field X for record 2 = 4, so when I tab into Field X for record 3 Access pre-fills the field with the next sequential value of 6.) Does anybody know how to shut this off? Thx!
