How to display a field from a table on the report header?

I want to display a report close date from a closemonth table. I can only display that close date field in the report's detail only. I want to show it in the report header, but when I put the field name on, it automatic has the equal sign (=) in front of it. And couldn't get the close date that I want when run the report (it asked for entering the close date when running it which I don't want to do that). Is there any way to pass a variable to a report header? Please help!
