I have started an RMA database for our company and have a question.

If a customer is sending back more than one item he needs to be assigned an RMA number for each item.

How do I do this without manually creating each record in the DB?
I've tried creating one and adding a duplicate button but I get paste errors every time I try it and I don't know why.

Can someone advise on the best method for doing this?

Thanks

Paul

Which part of a record do you want to duplicate ??

I have a table with customer details with a customerID and a table for RMAs whch looks up the customer details from the customerID field.

I'd like to duplicate the lookup field in the RMA table which contans the customer ID so that the customer is shown in the new record. There are a few other fields in the RMA table that I need duplicated also e.g. who raised the RMA, Date etc

Thanks,

Paul

You don't need the same data in two tables, (except foreign key).
I think you need to learn something about DATABASE NORMALIZATION.

There isnt the same data in both tables only 1 common field (customerID)

The query I have just pulls the RMA details and the Customer details from the 2 tables.

Could the paste error be happening because it's trying to paste data from both tables?

....

Yes, it seem to be as the duplicate record button is working now however what I really want is to be able to assign a number of RMAs to one customer and for it to tell me what one's it has assigned. The RMA number is an autonumber.

Another option might be to have RMA#0001A,B,C,D for 4 items being returned but I have no idea how to go about this.

I don't understand, what do you want really.

Ok the scenario is:

Customer phones up and has faulty 2 items to return for whatever reason e.g. damaged in transit.

Customer details are entered into the "customers" table

The customer then needs to be assigned 2 unique RMA numbers for the 2 items

When they arrive back they are both tested/repaired/scrapped/whatever

A report is generated at month end to show what the reasons for RMAs were.

e.g. too many "damaged in transit" means we need to change our courier ;)
