IE very slow detecting connection (1 Viewer)

I have a DSL and it's set up to connect like dial up using a name and password. My DSL modem went down so I bought a new one. Now when I open IE, it sits for about 15 seconds with a blank screen and an hourglass before the connect dialog comes up, almost like it takes IE that long to recognize that I'm not already connected. Before this happened it would connect the instant I opened IE.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Which modem have you got ? You may have to update the drivers for it.

It's a Speedstream modem, the same brand as the original one, but a much newer model.

I never installed any drivers for the original modem because XP didn't need them. The new modem came with an install disc but it's for installing the DSL modem from scratch and signing up for the service package from AT&T which I've had for years. I'll have to see if I can get the drivers from the disc without going through the set up process.
