Infected with worm Helkern, but don't know if i have SQL server 2000?

Heya,

so this morning i couldn't look at any internet pages b/c something was causing massive data transfers, jamming my usage.

i found info on kaspersky about Helkern (it detected Helkern, i don't know if it managed to do anything about but i seem to be able to view internet pages now: mind you, i am using a different connection (this morning was via my Virgin Broadband account, and now i am using a connection at my work).

the important thing kaspersky says about this worm is that it only affects computers running MS SQL server 2000 - now, i have *AN* MS SQL Server, but the program list in control panel doesn't show the version, and i can't seem to find a version number anywhere for it - the hotfix for this security issue says i MUST have AT LEAST service pack 2 installed, and the Microsoft update site has SP4 as the latest update - but 'windows update' on my computer never asked to install these, which leads me to belive that perhaps i DON'T have SQL 2000, but a different version?

plus the SP4 doesn't mention compatibility with Vista, and i can't figure out what other 'components' i have for this mysterious SQL server to know which KB updates to install from the SP4 site. There are three available for a 32-bit system:

*Database Components;
*Analysis Services Components; and
*SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) Components

anyone come across this?

do i need SQL server for just MS Access?

ok, now i just downloaded many many megs of update and on first attempt it tells me that MS SQL Server 2000 is incompatible with Vista - so i take it means i have a different version of SQL server on my computer (my control panel | Programs and Features has three entries for SQL server:

"Microsoft SQL Server Native Client"
"Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English)"
"Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer"

i don't *remember* installing this specifically, tho i may have in the past in a brief interest to see what could be done with it - do i need these installations to run MS Access? i suppose i can de-install them and see what happens, and re-install Access if i do need them...? anyone know? i'd rather wait till i got home b/c i don't have the installation disk with me at work...

edit: i should mention that all my databases at the moment are stand-alone mdb files (or accdb), and i'm nowhere near the stage of advancing to back/front ends or anything...

Hi there

It looks like you just have the sql server 2005 client connectivity installed.

Have a look at your services and see if you have
SQL SERVER (MSSQLSERVER) installed and running.

if you are absolutely sure that you didn't install any SQL server 2005, then have you got Office 2007? Office outlook 2007 now uses sql server as its database, so the sql server 2005 files you are seeing would have come from Office.

Don't worry about the virus, you don't have 2000 anyway :)

Moving forward if you do want to find out what version of sql server you have

Open a new query and run the following:
Code:
SELECT @@VERSION

LOL, what an appropriate user name you have ;)

i do have office 2007. i don't use outlook 2007, though i may have installed it at some point and then uninstalled it again.

The worm seems to be gone (or dormant?), so i think i'm ok now anyway. still, this SQL server thingy is a little weird. it's possible, i suppose that not only outlook but another email client is using it. or perhaps it's a remenant of outlook 2007... as there is no .exe file for me to open SQL server (like a regular program) - hence no where to type "SELECT @@VERSION". there was a file which looked like a command promt, but when i opened it none of my keystrokes registered...?

anyway, now that the worm isn't blocking my internet anymore i think i can breathe easy a little. maybe it's time to do a little program cleansing on my laptop... poor little thing, i've put it through so much! LOL ;)

thanks for your assistance SQL_Hell.
