Link two forms so it only records details for selection in one form

Well, i knew it wouldnt take long for me to encounter a problem

I have my Payment form finally done the way i wanted.

But i need to Enter the payment details for the selected tenant and not all of them at once which is what is happening to me at the moment. I know it joins i need but im useless at them.

I attached the database in the hope of someone been kind enough to take a look at it and lead me on the right road. This is the problem i have had for 3 days on my other attempt at the proper payment form.

The form is the tenants payment form i need the help on.

You will need to adjust your relationships to 1 property and many tenants.

In your property table go into design view ensure you have something like an ID field which is primary (autonumber would be good) and save.

Then in your tenant table go into design view and ensure you have a propertyID field as a number field and save

Then go into the Database Tools tab and select relationships, the line that joins your relationship between the 2 mentioned tables, double click the line then once the referentional integraty option opens, select 1 to many you should then beable to use the cascade update features.

Save and close afterwards you should then be able to ensure your main and sub form will work properly.

There must be an issue with your Table Design then.

What dataTypes are you using and what formats are being applied?

ID Field Primary as Autonumber

TennantID Field as Number Not Primary

The above should enable the relationships to work.

Also I can see you have PropertyID in the Tenant table. This could also be a cause.

Ok,.... i have

TenantID -> Tenant Table -> Primary Key (AutoNumber)
PropertyID -> Property Table -> Primary Key (AutoNumber)
TenantID -> Property Table -> Foregin Key (Number)

So now i have the TenantID (Tenant Table) and TenantID (Property Table) linked in a one-to-many relationship.

Will report back as im sure i will have something else %*@#$^ up

Its the payments by tenants form.

I want to navigate to a tenant and using the datasheet at the bottom enter in a payment they make, but when i do this, and say move to the next tenant name it displays the payment i just entered for the first tenant. So basically if i enter a payment it not doing it for just the selected tenant.

Check the CONTROL SOURCE property of that text box. If there's nothing in there then it's unbound.

When i checked the payments table, it shows all the enteries i made.

But i see a problem, it missing the TenantID, so i must figure out how to join the TenantID with the Payment being entered. ( lol great more joins for me )

Would this be the reason that when i go to the 'Tenants Payment Form' it doesnt show any of the payments i entered in the datasheet at the bottom of the tenant payment form?

Your question is unclear.

I really think you need to get some books from the local library to grasp some Access basics. It would do you good since you don't have the resources to employ professional help.

I'm sensing that you're using one of the templates in Access.

Yes, it one of the templates with changes to all of the forms, the one i got was more for the USA side of things.

I have some basic knowledge of Access, its mainly the joins i struggle with a lotttt. My biggest problem is conveying my thoughts as you probably have noticed.

That's why you're struggling. I don't see the templates as a good basis for your db. It's a good resource for learning how to do certain things you find useful on there but when it comes to building a db you do it from scratch. That way you know exactly what's happening in your db.

Maybe a labelled screenshot of the problem could help convey your thoughts?
