Linking a dbf file with a filename longer than 8 characters

I have several dbf files that I’d like to link into MS Access 2000 that have filenames longer than eight characters. Access by default doesn’t allow dbf filenames longer than eight characters. I really need to keep my dbf filenames the way they are right now (i.e. longer than eight characters long). Is there a way around this problem?
