MS Access 2007 "Students" template Help

The "students" database has a form called Studenst list. and there is a field that says "new" when clicked it opens a form to add a new student. and if there already a student the field says "open". how can i get this from to work with access 2003. i just cant seem to get it to work. it there different code. thanks
