I have been running Ms Access 2010 for my works finance and customer records on my works computer. The computer is on its way out and we are looking at getting a new one. It looks like its going to be one that is running Windows 8 and I have been searching the web with no luck to try and work out what my options are when it comes to transferring the database. I cant work out whether Access 2010 is compatible with Windows 8 or not and I also cant work out if I do have to upgrade to 2013 if I will be able to convert my database so it works with 2013. Any help would be appreciated.

New computers will be shipping with Win 8 so unless you want to pay for an older OS, I would go with that. Office 2010 comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions and they are not compatable. Both are on the CD and you should have the option of installing either. Go with the 32-bit for now since that will allow you to continue using ActiveX controls if you have any and will allow you to continue using any Addins you have for Word/Excel/Access. If you install the 64-bit, you will loose all your addins unless the maker offers a 64-bit version. Office 2013 is also a possibility (I hate to recommend buying an old version when a newer one is available but O2013 is still too new for me to install). I don't know if it also offers the 32-bit/64-bit option.

Thanks. So you are saying that the 2010 version will still work with Windows 8 as long as Im not using any addins(which I dont think I am)? Ive now ordered the new computer and it is indeed shipping with Windows 8 so still in a bit of a panic that I may either not be able to use my DB on the new computer or thinking that I may have to rebuild which would be a bit of a nightmare.

You will find that once you have installed office on your new PC that it will be fine.

I'm running access 2003 on windows 8 with no problems. I'm about to upgrade to office 2010 in order to continue working on my carpet shop database.

If you have any issues give me a shout.

Chris
