Nesting records

This may be impossible to do but I have a database of objects, of which some have been broken down into their component parts and given new records. I have a field for parent number but I was wondering if there was a way to next the children under the parent so if you queried the object you would get the children under it I would also like to lock the parent record as the object no longer exist but I don't want the information deleted Sorry if this make no sense and thanks for your time

Tables are for storing data. Queries are for linking data, doing calculations and preparing it for presentation.

What you've described is controlling data insertion, edition and deletion which should be accomplished in forms; and data presentation which should be done in Reports.
