We have been trying to get permission from our IT department (don't IT departments work for US - not themselves?) to put the Access program I wrote on one of our servers. I'm not sure what the their issue is, but we are hamstrung by this.

ATM one person has the program on his computer. It means only one person at a time can add/modify records. The whole point of this program was to make it accessible to the three or four people who need it - at the same time.

My question is this. How can I make the program accessible to more than one person at a time from a single computer? Would splitting the db into BE/FE emulate a server or will the same problem persist (ie only one person able to add/modify records at the same time).

Would converting my forms/reports to Data Access Pages (now that I know what they are) be a solution? Keep in mind all this has to be completed by April 1st.

Go to your boss. Tell him of the problems you're having with IT.

Have your boss go to the person above the boss of IT and clear the following.

Have your boss go to the boss of IT and inform him that the Access system is to be up on the server in an impossibly short time. Have your boss tell the boss of IT HIS boss wants this done.

You'll be amazed at how fast things go after that.

If the database is to be used on a server with more than one user, FE/BE is the way to go.

and it isnt the programme that needs to be on the server - its just the data

so have you split the front and back ends?

This has already been tried.

From your posts I have the feeling you have worked for the Canadian Federal Government at one time or another. NOTHING moves quickly at end of fiscal year (except maybe the bean counters) - least of all IT. Everything comes to a screeching halt until the new budgets come in.

If the database is to be used on a server with more than one user, FE/BE is the way to go.

I realize this. My question was can this be emulated using a desktop that is not a server?

So, just a question - Does IT not allow you to have an MDB/ACCDB file on the server? This would be just the backend and then you have the Frontend on each user's computer.

I would find it even more strange if IT allowed you to put the backend on a user's machine and let others connect to it with a frontend. It is possible to do, but it requires you to change permissions on that other computer, which will probably violate their policies anyway.

Re Canadian Government - I misspoke myself - anything NEW comes to a screeching halt. There is a mad frenzy to complete in progress stuff. This comes under NEW since it hasn't been installed.

Actually changing permissions is fairly simple. All it needs is the manager's approval. You have given me hope!
