Hello!
Wow, I can't believe that I have not been here! I am a diehard Basic programmer for 30+ years, but. . . I purchased Access ver. 1 in the early 1990s (I still have it in my garage!). I sold an Access 'off the shelf' accounting package to a client but it was not COMPLETE! I didn't touch Access again until. . .

Jump ahead to 1998 when I was hired at a state government agency of approximately 800 employees (total of 3 application developers!) for 1 year to convert a mainframe application to VB6. I didn't touch that project (a solution was just purchased 'off the shelf' for $900k), but was allowed to use Access 97 to do some other conversions including many from Paradox. Wow, I was sold (as well as ALL of my 'users') on Access then!

Since then, I am considered the Access guru (although I stay away from active x controls, record sets, and most other 'coding'. Don't get me wrong, I love to solve problems with code, just use Access' functionality FIRST! In 2003, our agency upgraded to Office 2003 including Access 2003.

. . Three years ago, 2009, we upgraded to Office 2007 (due to our implentation of SharePoint 2007). Unfortunately, our new (1 year) dba said that Access was 'going away'. . . so we stayed with Access 2003 - AND with the dba (aka 'golden boy') saying that .net/n tier/Visual Studio/Sql/C# was the ONLY way to go. He even said that VB was 'going away'!

I was mandated to learn ALL of those technologies as well as SharePoint. . . Jump ahead to today, he is gone and we might consider upgrading to Office 2010 with our migration to SharePoint 2010 - and MAYBE get to Access 2010 - hurray!

I have tried learning the new technologies but have gotten SO :banghead:discouraged about the COMPELXITY of the 'new' world compared to the simplicity AND maturity :D of Access.

We just had our most recent 'new technology' C# developer of 2 years quit and get a job in the private sector (coding in vb.net and Crystal Reports ).

I am very excited about Access 2010 AND SharePoint 2010 and their interfacing together. Now Access can do web 'things' and integrate with our new 'Sharing' environment!

This Hello is probably more than most people will read, but you might be able to relate to similar situations as mine. I look forward to ALL emails/blog entries, as I plan to get our agency into at least the 2010 world!

Sinceley,

Karl
P.S.: I love pinball (the old fashion kind with REAL steel balls! – go Monster Bash)
