Outlook has stopped selecting the first email in a folder

hi guys

as the title suggests - my outlook has stopped selecting the first email in a folder when its opened - for example when I used to click on my sent or deleted items folders it would automatically highlight/select the top/first email in the folder.

any ideas??

James in the sent items it is set to remember if you selected another email, so if you had previously opened something that you sent when you return to that folder it will go to email you had previously checked.

That is my understanding.

Yes i understand but thats not the issue. Even when I open outlook from the start it happens. And it doesnt select the wrong email - it doesnt select any email at all!! it just highlights the top one with a grey background but doesnt select it (blue background)...

does this make sense?

I am sure you have checked all the settings and reverted them back to default.

Have you looked at the Current View and Default View options?

ye looked at those settings and cant see anything wrong. any other ideas?

it happens when i switch between folders. normally it highlights the top message but it just greys out now...

ok figured it out. just took of reading pane and restarted outlook and turned reading pane back on and now its working again! weird.
