Performance of multiple back-ends

I have three Access back-ends in a db I've developed in 3 phases. Two of them fall along functional lines. One group of users works mostly out of Phase1, though not exclusively, and another group works mostly out phase2. Eight people are now in the db a majority of the day.
One of my backburner tasks has been to merge these into one, for simplicity sake, and so that I can enforce referential integrity.
One thing I've wondered is if I am gaining any increased performance by them being separate. This runs on a small office router network with a minimal file-server, and as you might imagine, the speed that the db runs is an issue.
Any thoughts,

Consolidate.

You will get performance gains with persistency i.e. having a file in each back end open all the time.
