Hello forum,

How do you keep users from viewing a form in its "design view" format?

one way would be to disable the toolbars on the top by going to options> startup and set a certain form to the opening form. alos you wanna disable the database window.
but dont forget to make a way for yourself to get to the window when u need too. one way is holding shift while the database opens

If you are using 2003 or higher you can create a MDE file for users.
Tools | Create MDE File

If you are using 2003 or higher you can create a MDE file for users.
Tools | Create MDE File

Correction - If you are using Access you can create an MDE file. MDE files have been available at least in 97 and above and I am pretty sure that they were available in Access 2.0 and above.

We use MDE files all of the time in Access 2000 at work here.

Good to know, Thanks Bob.
I guess I haven't used 2000 for a while.

Lilli,
Make sure to keep a copy in .mdb format! Because YOU will also be prevented from making any changes or viewing in design view once you have converted it to an .mde file format.

When you create an MDE it doesn't do anything to your mdb file. I creates a separate file.

Another method is to establish a workgroup security file, and define the permissions of the users. This will cause a log-in to pop up when the db is opened, and depending on the log in, will allow different permissions to the admin, and also different users or groups of users.
This is a complicated and tricky procedure, but it's really well worth the effort. You must be careful that you don't lock yourself out of design mode, though - or even from opening the db at all!
The advantage over the mde file, is that the db can continue to be developed by the admin - the mde can't be opened in design mode by anyone and thus development is frozen. SO it's fine as long as you're finished developing the db, otherwise it's not the best method.

I can't detail all the steps involved, it's just too elaborate - there is a wizard though. Look under Tools-> Security -> User and Group permissions.
Maybe someone else can detail the procedure - but you're better off getting a good book on Access and reading the section on security.

Is this true of 2002 files converted to mde? Or does it have to be converted to an mde from 2000 format? I'm trying to make an mde file from a 2000 file while working in 2002 - which makes me convert the file to 2002 format before it can/will save it as an mde file. (Is that circular or what?) I just want to make sure users on 2000 will be able to work with the file.
Thanks!

Hi, I found this link, which indicates that Access 2000 and earlier can't read an MDE file created in 2002/XP:
