Hi all. After having read quite a few posts I have noticed an overriding theme of having forms based on queries instead of using tables as the source for the form. Is using queries the best method for the record source for a form?

Yes. Look for post from Pat Hartman to explain why. Use the search function entering Pat Hartman for user and query recordsource for keywords.
