Property - set / let / get

Hi people,

can somebody explain to me what the get - let - set statements are used for. I am not sure when to use them. I know about setting references for example set db as dao.database., but i am not sure how i would use the set statement when i have declared my own variable. I would be grateful if somebody could explain how to use these usefult statements.
