Pulling off latest criteria

I have a databse which tracks a franchisee recruitment process, with something like 12 stages in the process. At each stage the date is recorded and (sometimes) a text comment. I want to produce a report that shows how many potential delegates we have at each stage of the process. How do I do this without pulling off all the previous stages they have been through? i.e. I only want to see what was the last contact with them.
