If you open the form in the attached database nothing seem out of the normal, but if you switch to design view and then back to form view the detail background turns black; at least most of it.

This form was changed from the defaults with the following:

  1. Detail Back Color was set to #E3E3E3
  2. Detail Alternate Back Color was set to No Color
  3. A command button was added

It appears that all three of these conditions are necessary for the behavior to occur. Even changing the Back Color to #E3E3E2 or #E3E3E4 seems to make the behavior disappear.

Can anyone explain this?

Yeah, that's weird all right. Weirder still, if I open the form and it appears black, and I drag a different window over the black form, it erases the blackness and leaves it #e3e3e3 where the overlapping form used to be.

V. strange.

I tried this.

In A2003 you had to enter the decimal value, rather than hex value, and there wasn't an alternate value facility, so it's all new to me.

Have you got the same result with any other grey tone?

fwiw, rgb(227,227,227) is 14935011 and that doesn't give a black background in A2003.

I tried #E3E3E2 and #E3E3E4 and it doesn't happen with them. I haven't been able to get it to do it with any other colors. I also confirmed your results. If I save the database in the 2002-2003 format the problem goes away.
