Hi - I am new to this forum and fairly new to database design. I have recently created a simple database tracking staff and volunteers for a non-profit organization I am involved with. I am happy with how it is working, except that when I try to email it, or burn it to a CD, it saves as "Read-Only", which is fairly useless to the manager at the organization.

When I check the properties on the original file, they are not marked as read-only, and when I run it on my own computer, does not operate as read-only.

Any advice how to email/save it without it being read-only is much appreciated,

Melissa

If you burn it to a CD, it can't write to itself and so it is read-only. If they copy it from the CD, they need to go into it's properties and uncheck the read-only box (unless they have Windows XP or Vista - those will do it automatically).

But, since Access can't write to the locking file (.ldb) on a CD, it can't be anything but read-only on a CD, unless the CD is a CDRW and is formatted for Direct Access.

and via email....?

Thanks Bob, I appreciate your reply. One more question - is it a similar reason that they can only open it as read-only when I send it via email, or something else?

thanks
Melissa

Vista

Vista on the main computer, and XP on the others.....

thanks

Well, normally when an Access database is put on a CD, it is read-only until you copy it to your local computer. In versions of Windows prior to XP it would keep the read-only flag set and you would have to go in and manually uncheck it.

But, in XP it would automatically uncheck it for you. But, I'm not totally sure about Vista. Have they looked at the file properties of the database and made sure it isn't marked as such on their end?

Also, do they have read/write rights to the folder they copied it into on the computer? The need read and write rights for it to work.
